Kendo is a practice somewhere between sport and martial art. Its point system and international popularity contrast heavily against its organic materials and strong traditional roots. As half Japanese, I feel a similar contrast in myself where I often feel cultural pulls in opposing directions. This experience drew me to kendo, where through practice and discipline, I learned more about myself and my unique perspective.

While graciously allowed to join Waseda University’s Kendo Club, I took the opportunity to document the niche world of kendo as seen through my eyes. Over the course of one year, this intimate experience with a top university’s team transformed my life. That story is presented here through photography.
